Restore something you removed with MoreRoom

Put items back with Undo (⌘Z), History or Finder’s Put Back — and what can’t be restored: emptied Trash, items removed by their tool.

In short

  • Right after a removal: click Undo in the message at the bottom of the window, or press ⌘Z (Edit › Undo Move to Trash).
  • Later: click History in the sidebar and click Restore next to the removal. Items go back to where they were.
  • Once the Trash is emptied, MoreRoom can’t restore anything. Items removed by their own tool (Permanent) can’t be restored either.

How to restore items from History

  1. Open History Scan your Mac if needed, then click History in the sidebar, under Explore.
  2. Find the removal Each line shows the number of items, their size and the date and time.
  3. Click Restore The items go back to their original place and MoreRoom rescans. The line now says Restored.

Three ways to put things back

When How
Right after removing Click Undo in the message at the bottom of the window (it stays a few seconds).
Any time, most recent first Press ⌘Z, or choose Edit › Undo Move to Trash. It restores the latest removal that can still be restored.
Any time, any removal Click History in the sidebar, then Restore next to the removal you want.

Each removal is restored as a whole: an uninstalled app comes back with all its leftovers, a hibernated project with all its folders, a Collector batch with all its items.

You can also use Finder: open the Trash, Control-click an item and choose Put Back.

What History shows

  • Restore — the batch can be put back.
  • Restored — it already was.
  • “n not restored yet” — some items of the batch couldn’t be put back, for example because you emptied part of the Trash or something else now uses their place. Click Restore again after fixing it.
  • Removed by tool — items removed by their tool’s command: the command is shown, and there’s nothing to restore in the Trash.

If an item’s original place is taken by a new file with the same name, MoreRoom restores it next to it rather than overwriting anything.

What can’t be restored

  • Anything after the Trash is emptied. MoreRoom never empties it for you; if you did, use a backup — Time Machine, for example.
  • Items removed by their own tool, marked Permanent in the review sheet. Most can be downloaded or rebuilt again with the tool (simulators with Xcode, packages with their package manager).
  • Cloud downloads removed with Keep in the Cloud aren’t in the Trash — they’re still in your cloud drive. Open a file to download it again, or choose Download Now in Finder.
