In short
- The menu bar item shows your startup disk’s available space, the forecast and what can be freed, with shortcuts to Free Up Space, Storage Weather and Rescan.
- Hide or show it in Settings › General › Show MoreRoom in the menu bar.
- Open at login, in the menu bar opens MoreRoom without a window when you log in, so Storage Weather, the widget and alerts stay up to date.
The menu bar item
Click the MoreRoom icon (stacked squares) in the menu bar. It shows:
- Macintosh HD with the space available and the total, and a usage bar;
- the Storage Weather forecast — “Full in about n days at this pace”, “Free space is stable” or “Gathering data for the forecast”. Click it to open Storage Weather;
- after a scan, how much “can be freed safely”;
- Open MoreRoom, Free Up Space… (scans first if needed), Storage Weather…, Rescan and Quit MoreRoom.
To hide it, turn off Show MoreRoom in the menu bar in MoreRoom › Settings… › General. It’s on by default.
Open at login
Turn on Open at login, in the menu bar — in Settings › General or at the bottom of Storage Weather. From then on, MoreRoom opens when you log in, without a window, and keeps measuring in the background. It uses almost no energy: one quick reading every 30 minutes, scheduled by macOS.
Click the menu bar item, or MoreRoom in the Dock, to open the window when you need it.
If macOS refuses the change, the switch turns itself back off. Then open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions, and add MoreRoom under Open at Login with the + button.
To stop it, turn the switch off, or remove MoreRoom from Open at Login in System Settings.
Closing the window vs quitting
- Closing the window leaves MoreRoom running: the menu bar item, Storage Weather, the widget and alerts keep working.
- Quit MoreRoom (⌘Q, or from the menu bar item) stops everything until you open it again.
