# I removed files, but my free space didn’t come back

> Why free space doesn’t change after a cleanup — the Trash, ghost space held by open apps, local snapshots, purgeable space — and how to get it back.

## In short

- Items moved to the Trash still take space: empty the Trash when you’re sure. MoreRoom never empties it for you.
- An app may keep deleted files open. MoreRoom’s ghost space card shows how much and which app to quit.
- Local Time Machine snapshots can keep deleted files for a while; macOS removes them on its own, usually within 24 hours.

## How to get the space back

1. **Empty the Trash.** Control-click the Trash in the Dock and choose Empty Trash. After that, items can’t be restored.
2. **Check ghost space.** Open MoreRoom’s home screen or Free Up Space. If a card says space is held by deleted files, quit the app it names.
3. **Give snapshots time, or restart.** Local snapshots expire on their own. Restarting your Mac also releases ghost space and shrinks virtual memory.
4. **Check again.** Look at the home screen, or rescan with ⌘R.

## 1. The Trash isn’t empty

MoreRoom moves items to the Trash, so you can undo. That’s why its message says “*size* moved to the Trash” and not “freed”: the space only comes back when the Trash is emptied. Empty it from the Dock (Control-click the Trash › **Empty Trash**) or from Finder (**Finder › Empty Trash…**) when you’re sure.

Exceptions: items **removed by their tool** (marked “freed by their tool”), [Keep in the Cloud](https://moreroom.app/support/keep-in-the-cloud) and [Free Without Deleting](https://moreroom.app/support/free-without-deleting) free their space right away.

## 2. An app still holds the files

A file you deleted keeps its space as long as an app has it open. MoreRoom calls this [ghost space](https://moreroom.app/support/ghost-space): when it’s 500 MB or more, a card on the home screen and in **Free Up Space** shows how much, and **Quit** buttons for the apps holding it.

## 3. Local snapshots

If Time Machine is on, macOS keeps local snapshots of your disk for about a day. Deleted files stay in them until they expire, and macOS removes snapshots by itself when it needs room. MoreRoom’s [System Data, explained](https://moreroom.app/support/system-data-screen) says how many snapshots there are right now. More in our guide [Time Machine local snapshots](https://moreroom.app/learn/time-machine-local-snapshots).

## 4. It was purgeable space

If you removed caches that macOS already counted as **purgeable**, Finder’s “available” number barely changes — it already included that space. See [Why numbers differ](https://moreroom.app/support/numbers-differ).

## 5. It came back somewhere else

Caches and build folders labelled “Safe to remove” come back when apps need them. [Storage Weather](https://moreroom.app/support/storage-weather) shows which folders grew this week.

Our guide [Deleted files, but storage isn’t changing](https://moreroom.app/learn/deleted-files-storage-not-changing) covers more cases.
