## What is it?

Vagrant downloads base images, called boxes, into `~/.vagrant.d/boxes` and uses them to create new virtual machines. Each box and version is kept until you remove it. A box is typically 0.5–5 GB.

## What happens if you delete it?

A removed box is downloaded again the next time a `Vagrantfile` needs it during `vagrant up`. VMs already created from the box are separate and are not affected.

## How to remove it properly

Run `vagrant box list` to see your boxes, `vagrant box remove <name>` to delete one, or `vagrant box prune` to remove outdated versions. These commands delete permanently.

## Before you delete it

Boxes from a private source, or that are no longer published, cannot be downloaded again.
