## What is it?

IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand and other JetBrains IDEs keep indexes, local history and caches in `~/Library/Caches/JetBrains`, one folder per product and version. Folders for versions you no longer use stay after upgrades. Typically a few GB.

## What happens if you delete it?

The IDE rebuilds its indexes the next time you open a project, which can take several minutes on large projects. Your settings and projects are not stored here.

## How to remove it properly

To reset the current IDE, use File › Invalidate Caches… inside it. To free space, quit the IDEs and move folders for old versions to the Trash in Finder (Go › Go to Folder… `~/Library/Caches/JetBrains`). Recent IDEs also offer to delete leftover directories from old versions.

## Before you delete it

Local History (the IDE’s own record of file changes) is stored in these caches and is lost when they are deleted.
