# Is it safe to delete large .gguf or .safetensors files on Mac?

- URL: https://moreroom.app/folders/files-ai-models
- Item: AI model files
- Location: `*.gguf, *.safetensors, *.ckpt, *.pth, *.pt, *.onnx, *.keras`
- Verdict: Keep — your data — Your data. Shrink it from its app; don’t delete the folder.
- Comes back on its own: no
- Typical size: 200 MB–100 GB per file

## What is it?

This covers large model weight files of 200 MB or more (`.gguf`, `.safetensors`, `.ckpt`, `.pth`, `.pt`, `.onnx`, `.keras`) found in your home folder outside the AI tools listed elsewhere in this directory. They are often downloaded models, but they can also be checkpoints from your own training or fine-tuning. Single files range from hundreds of MB to tens of GB.

## What happens if you delete it?

Not automatically. A downloaded model can often be found and downloaded again from its source; a model you trained yourself is gone for good if deleted.

## How to remove it properly

Check where each file came from and which app uses it. To free space safely, copy files you may need to an external drive, check the copy, then move the originals to the Trash. Delete only files you know you can download again.

## Before you delete it

`.pt` and `.pth` are also used for other PyTorch data, not only models. Apps may stop working if a file they expect is missing.
